Midweek racing comes to us from Doomben this week. We had a nice day on the punt there Saturday so hopefully we can back that up today. The track is rated a Good 3 with a chance of showers. Even if they showers come I would doubt they’ll have much effect on the track. The rail is out 7m from the 900 to 375 and 4.5m the remainder of the track.
A tricky maiden to kick things off. There’s a couple first starters here that enter this on the back of trial wins. I’m going with one of these in Colour Charge (4). It won a Sunshine Coast barrier trial by 3.3 lengths in reasonable time. From the Natalie McCall stable and has top jockey Damian Browne in the saddle. Other hopes to Charlie Cat (3), Sunset Hills (9) and Mr Positive (4).
Murtle Miss (6) put in an eye catching 1st up run here a few weeks ago. She was resuming after spelling for nearly 300 days and really hit the line hard to only just miss out. With further fitness she’ll be hard to hold out in this field. The extra 150m will suit. Hardest to beat Astralin (1) and Oh Candy (7).
King Halo (8) was backed in from $6 to $3 on debut and almost pulled off the win. He finished 3rd over 1200m but was hitting the line strongly. The extra 150m here will suit and drops 3kg in weight. Gets the services of Michael Cahill. Other hopes to Supercoach (4), San Clemente (10) and Shenval (3).
Pasquinel (2) has been putting together a nice record as he steps up through the grades. He’s only been out of the placings twice in 9 starts and enters this race on the back of a very nice win at this track and distance. He charged to the line to win that race by 1.8 lengths. Rises in weight but claims 2kg for Kirk Matheson. Should be sufficient speed for him to unleash a powerful finish. Hardest to beats Saveeda (5).
Really ordinary race this. Plenty of horses who have had plenty of starts for very few wins. I’m going with the Tony Gollan trained Dandy Fine (6). Her 2 most recent starts have been good efforts over this distance at Ipswich. Last start she won a Class 1 by 3/4 of a length but was hands and heals to the line in soft fashion. This horse may have more upside than it’s rivals. Priscilla Schmidt claims 2kg. Other hopes to Gallinari (7), Witches Lips (10) and Bo Rossa (2).
Surface Tension (2) doesn’t win a lot of races but boy this old dog loves racing over this trip. He has 4 wins from 30 career starts. However over the 1600m his record is 3 wins and 2 2nds from 6 starts. He’s drawn to take the box seat and with Damian Browne in the saddle, he’ll prove hard to beat. Other hopes to Gotcha (6), Carbon Taikun (4) and Boomalicious (7).
Miss Zizou (3) is undefeated in her 2 career starts. She resumes here after 5 months off on the back of an easy trial win. Prior to her spell she won a class 3 over this trip suggesting she has a bit of class. She’s drawn wide but should have the necessary speed to cross and lead. Other hopes to Country Command (1), Faith’N’Courage (2) and Kala’s Belle (7).
After almost 2 years off the scene, Rock Royalty (7) has come back in nice style. He won his maiden when resuming by 3.3 lengths. Last start he ran 2nd to Lucky Baa last start by 1.8 lengths. Lucky Baa has since run 2nd in class 4 company. He should be back to full fitness now 3rd up and I expect a big showing. Other hopes to Moment Of Impact (2), Proof Of Life (6) and Masterful Play (10).
